Only You Can Prevent Fire Hazards

We like to keep ol' Smokey the Bear's tag line in mind when creating an event, but we've tweaked it a bit. "Only good planners can prevent event hazards."
From flameless luminaries in a variety of sizes, to these new bamboo tiki torches from Fortune Products Inc., fire hazards are easily mitigated. Just use batteries and LEDs because event planners know who wins when we battle the wind. Check out the bamboo tiki torches! These handcrafted high-quality bamboo torches break down into three pieces. That will keep shipping costs low for a destination wedding or out of town event. Boasting an instant, easy set up, these torches run about 20 or so hours on two AA batteries.

We intended to keep this post about types of event hazards, but that's not going to happen! Just fell in love with Fortune Products Inc's Fairy Berries. We know it might be a weird name but these little delightful "berries" can create a fantasy-like feel for an event. Fairy Berries are round balls that produce a "moving firefly or fairy-light effect that is absolutely unique," according to the company's website. Each tiny (3/4 inch) clear ball has a white LED light that fades slowly on and off. Even better? We can put these little gems in trees or hang them from just about anywhere because each ball has a recessed hook.

Let's get back to the part about event hazards for a second. What could go wrong with Fairy Berries? Nothing unless small children pick 'em up before the parent gently explains to the child that they shouldn't put these in their mouths. Also, watch out for Grandma with the bad hip and poor eye sight. Keeping these Fairy Berries, electrical cords, in a concentrated location, might prevent her from accidentally slipping on one. Oopsie! Also, be courteous to the event venue's staff, especially when you use a public park or other locale...if after an event, the location goes back to "open to the public," be sure to clean up. You don't want to be responsible for a pup getting a hold of flower petals (some are poisonous for animals) and since you can recycle decor items, be sure to retrieve them.

Heard of this site yet y'all? If not, head over to www.pinterest.com and request an invitation. Have oodles stored in your "Favorites"? Even if you think it's organized perfectly (by folders, no doubt), your system is about to be trumped with Pinterest's oh so fabulous, user-friendly, super visual twist! Pinterest allows you to bookmark and share your latest loves from the web in one spot and includes a function for followers or following! You know the girlfriend you have with impeccable taste? Right, the one who finds the coolest prints or sweetest antiques? If she's on Pinterest, you can follow her.

Pinterest is a basically an online design board. When you start an account, you're set up with default boards and allowed to "pin" websites or upload images to the respective boards. For example, I have a board called "Gadgets and Tech" and it includes neat little tech-y products I've had my eye on and another for "Quotables" which features prints of funny or favorite quotes.

Will I keep ripping pages out of magazines? Most likely, but I'll use this new tool too! Sniff, sniff that's not from Calvin Klein....but we smell an obsession with Pinterest coming your way!

We love reading Special Events Magazine! I especially enjoyed the May/June 2011 issue and the article about "What's Big in Big-City Weddings" from SE's On Trend section. Sacks Production, a Los Angeles-based event planning company, is known for catering to the design desires and whims of celebs like Khloe Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez. What does the company's president have to say? Just what we've been thinking! She says she is seeing clients "go with a natural feeling instead of a pave look." Instead of opulence, opt for creating a feeling or a mood--guests will appreciate your attention to their comfort. Traditional receptions are going by the wayside in favor of more parties, more fun and we don't dare say less glamour, but perhaps less glitz and manufactured elegance.

Our other fave takeaway from this piece? "October is the new June," according to Sarah Pease at Brilliant Event Planning in NYC. Sweating through seersucker isn't just commonplace in the Southeast, brides and grooms nationwide are realizing sweatstains stink. We say, bring on those October and November color-palattes. Hooray!

Even wedding planners like a day off! I had such a great time in Nashville for Jennie and Garrett's May wedding. Music City never disappoints even after the disastrous flooding recently. The weekend started out with a lovely rehearsal dinner at Brentwood's charming bakery and restaurant, The Puffy Muffin. Ever wondered about those bridal shows you see advertised on billboards? Should you go? Is it worth your time and money? Should you drag the fiance? Will he hate it?

Allow us to guide you through the bridal show mania! We like bridal shows for a few reasons:
-Brides and grooms get a chance to check it all out in person. No matter how many books and magazines you read, nothing compares to seeing the wedding day components like cakes and flowers in person.
-The down side is listening to the sales pitches from prospective vendors. The folks who staff these events are sometimes just a bit persistent, but we find that a simple "We're just getting ideas, thanks for your time," helps steer a couple on to the next booth.
-There are contests to enter. Some bridal websites even suggest bringing pre-printed address labels so that you can enter all the drawings at these shows. Just beware, you're also signing up to be on a mailing list by entering the contests.
-Take a big purse and make sure you have a pen for any notes about vendors you'd like to make for yourself. Bridal shows usually have plastic bags for you to put all the catalogs and vendor brochures in, but be eco-friendly and keep up with them yourself.
-Go for the food! Often you can make a meal out of the samples from catering companies and save room for cake samples.
-Don't miss the fashion show. Check the program from the show you are attending, most list the time for that day's fashion show and seats fill up rather quickly.

The new Web site launched today and it is a free service which allows journalists to announce source needs via email to up to 51,000 experts in the company’s database. From what we can tell, HARO and reporterconnection.com are similar, the latter has tweaked what worked for HARO and made it more "journalist-friendly" and will not publish the journalist's email addresses like HARO does via daily email blasts.

Charleston's premiere beach bar and club became a fixture on IOP back in 1972 when it was founded by two brothers. The NY Times Touts the Value of "the PR Machine" in Recent Article

Read this article in The New York Times from Brooks Burns now! The article entitled "Ad Budget Tight? Call the PR Machine" reminds us of the roots and follows the trends in public relations tactics in Hollywood and beyond. Of course, Hollywood hasn't cut out marketing or advertising entirely, but consider this: Paramount Pictures did not buy a single billboard to promote “Paranormal Activity,” its recent horror film. The studio also saved tens of millions of dollars by forgoing a national television campaign. Instead, Paramount depended on its publicity arm to fan interest on blogs and in traditional media. The flack attack worked: the film, made for just $10,000, has sold $104 million in tickets. Catwalkers don't LOVE scary movies, so we haven't seen it, but hey--we're just saying!
The article goes on to discuss Disney's new in-house program that generates the ad value for say a 30 second interview on "Access Hollywood" as compared to buying a 30 second spot during the same show. The article also mentions the value of a "media hit" compared to that of a paid advertisment. Consumers often are more apt to take a suggestion and make a purchase because they saw Oprah interview the company's founder, which has a solid impact. Viewers who saw a commercial for the same company's product might or might not remember the product. Since "media hits" seem to have gone through a filter first, that makes them more vaulable for our clients.

He's a two year-old rescue boxer and he's seen me through hard times and I don't know what I'd do without his little dog face waking me up every morning.

Now you can, Catwalk is proud to announce that we have our very own choreographer. Catwalk's new dance diva will choreograph and teach your wedding party how to make an entrance that none of the guests will ever forget.

Prefer to keep your ceremony traditional? Then think about dancing into your reception to your favorite hit song. No more DJs announcing the bridal parties names as guests try to find seats and check out the reception venue--wake them up with a mini-production! Making a grand entrance is a great way to incorporate little ones too-how cute would your flower girls be shaking it to an old classic or what about your groom and his buddies doing Thriller?

Catwalk's choreographer has 20+ years of dance training. She's our secret weapon, having competed in group and solo categories at various dance competitions throughout the Southeast for 10+ years and she was also the choreographer for Carolina Alive! Showchoir at USC from 2000-2003. This gal has been hired by Chapin High School’s choir and, most recently, Wando High School for both their ladies’ ensemble and co-ed showchoir.

Who doesn't love the wedding cake? I recently watched a Style Channel show called The Art of Cakes and just died...yes, channeling Rachel Zoe-but about cakes, not couture.

The little cupcakes, adorable. The dessert bar, charming. An amazing cake with edible sugar flowers so life-like that one can't tell the difference between the real flower and the edible flower, fantastic. The cake GURU, a one Sylvia Weinstock, even autographs her cakes-rightly so, they're works of art. So she signs them, much like Da Vinci signed his work. A wedding cake can be the crowning glory at the reception, reigning from its own table-the cake speaks to the couple's idea of grandeur, their traditions, or it might reflect the bride's dress with lace detailing. And that's just the outside. The inside can be a decadent combination of flavors and fillings, from the mundane to the out of this world. From chocolate ganache to organic carrot cake, bakers do it all.

Prepare to be amazed when thinking about a cake for your wedding. Use your imagination and most importantly, find a cake designer who is supportive, and who offers creative suggestions. Catwalk's Wedding Weekend with Em and Rob

Catwalk and Company's first wedding under the new business was definitely a success. The bride was beautiful in a Nicole Miller gown, her groom sported seersucker and Dolly Parton was in attendance. OK, not the real Dolly, but an impersonator. Our Dolly's version of "Something Special" was the first dance song and her rousing rendition of "Rocky Top" made sure these guests had a foot-stomping, knee slapping good time.

After a service at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrell's Inlet, guests enjoyed a reception at Kimbel's at Wachesaw Plantation. The tables were set with calla lilies and sea glass centerpieces, the cake was complete with layers of red velvet, raspberry with white cake, and even a hazelnut with chocolate layer. Guests loved the gorgeous marsh views from the deck at Kimbel's and the bride and groom exited in style with white-hot sparklers to their after-party at the Hot Fish Club.

Home Car Washing Pollutes. The Numbers Prove It.

Another study just released proves that home car washing is harmful. In Federal Way, WA residents are learning what environmentalists have known for years, washing their cars in the driveway is detrimental to local waterways.

As a proud SC resident and I love Lowcountry life. I buy lemonade from school children on the beach and purchase cookies from Girl Scounts outside Wal-Mart. I don't however support charity car washes. Charity car washes are a thing of the past or perhaps, they should be. Residents protect our local waterways from trash and debris, by participating in beach cleanups, urging tourists to pick up after themselves and Charleston even touts an entire festival centered around green businesses,the Charleston Green Festival in Marion Square.

In the Lowcountry, we have a gorgeous structure, The Ravenel Bridge. We appreciate sealife so much that we turn the lights on the bridge off at night, so that sea turtles don't become disoriented as they navigate to the ocean. The Federal Way Mirror says "the harmful materials that find their way to the region's (in Washington)waterways reek chaos on aquatic life. Products such as oil can contaminate wildlife. Phosphorous and nitrogen can lead to excessive plant growth and decay, which degrades water quality, according to the study."

The article also mentions how stormwater and materials caught up in the water will flow to nearby creeks, streams and lakes. "These then transport the items to the Puget Sound. The stormwater catch basins are designed to restrict solids from entering the drainage system, but pollutants slip by sometimes, Smith said."

JK Wedding Dance Entrance found well-deserved You Tube fame. And the fantastic part, they even made it to The Today Show! That's right, The Today Show booked them and had the entire wedding party and bride and groom recreate their wedding entrance on live television.

For all you non-believers (in the impact of viral videos, social media marketing/networking and the like), Catwalk and Company says, wake up! This is a great example of the power of viral videos and their impact on mainstream media. To date, Jill and Kevin's video has had 13,972,246 views!

Dirty Car, New Client!

Everyone loves a clean car. Heck, you might not mind driving carpool, taking your friends out to happy hour or even going that road trip to your 87 year-old aunt's house four states away if you've got a great playlist on the IPOD, stellar coffee or enough diet coke for a small army and a clean car. I've never had the clean car. I'm the girl who scrambles to move shoes, magazines, empty diet coke cans, and that belt that I thought would match, then I got to where I was going, and well, decided clearly it did not match. Let's not forget the 65 lb. boxer pup that travels with me, hitting up dog parks all over town. Oh, and a bright pink yoga mat. Nope, not your clean car keepin' kind of gal.

Chanel and The Grand Palais

What an incredible venue for Chanel's Haute Couture Show yesterday. Paris staged its first Universal Exhibition in 1855 and built the Palais de l'industrie, inspired by Britain's Crystal Palace, which demonstrated France's ability to replicate Britain's technical achievement. Adding a stone facade drew further admiration from the public. The Palais de l'Industrie, constructed for the 1855 Universal Exhibition, was demolished and replaced by the Grand Palais in 1900. The Palais de l'Industrie is dead, vive le Grand Palais!

Chanel's Fall-Winter Collection exposes short hemlines, oozes romance and evokes a sense of mystery! The only disappointment-the presence of the shoe bootie. Other than that, bien fait as always Sir Lagerfeld.

Do you think Pachelbel's Cannon in D sounds better with the cadence of ocean waves in the background? If so, you might be considering a beach wedding. There is no doubt about it, beach weddings are en vogue.

Beach weddings can be elegant affairs combined with the sun, surf and sand or sometimes, they might require little more than a snazzy pair of your favorite flip flops.
